Simple Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce is practically mandatory at the holidays. This version is simple to make, with the right amount of sweetness to balance the tartness of the berries; orange juice and zest add flavor.

Makes 12 servings

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 4 cups fresh cranberries or 1 (16-ounce) bag frozen cranberries, divided
  • 2 tbsp orange zest, plus additional for garnish
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice

Directions

  1. In a saucepan combine sugar and water; bring to boiling. Add 2 cups cranberries; return to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer over low heat 5 to 10 minutes or until cranberries pop and sauce thickens.
  2. Stir in remaining 2 cups cranberries, 2 tablespoons orange zest and orange juice. Cook 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with additional orange zest, if desired.
