Artfully Aflutter
Metamorphosis isn’t just for caterpillars—it also happens when you transform a space with one of these elegant butterfly-inspired crafts.
MONOCHROMATIC OVERSIZED ART
A few supplies and a little time turn a blank canvas into something lovely. The perceived movement of butterflies creates interest while the monochromatic palette makes this piece a seamless addition to any room’s color scheme and decor.
Materials
Feather butterflies
Flat spray paint, white
30 x 30 canvas
Tools
Drop cloth
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
Instructions
Lay butterflies on drop cloth, right side up. Spray an even coat of spray paint. Let dry. Paint second coat, if needed. Use hot glue to adhere the underside of the butterflies to the white canvas, placing more at the base of the canvas and gradually editing towards the top. Hang.
FOILED SHADE
While appearing to be a plain fabric/paper lamp shade in daylight, the shade shows off when the light turns on. Metal leafing applied inside the shade creates butterfly shadows on the outside. This easily-crafted design celebrates God's Creation. Download the template here.
Materials
Stencil sheets
Butterfly Stencil Template
Pencil
Tape
Lamp shade, light tan color
Metal leaf spray adhesive
Silver leaf sheets
Metal leaf spray sealer
Table lamp
Tools
Self-healing cutting mat
Craft knife
Metal leaf brush, optional
Instructions
Lay a stencil sheet over the provided template, and trace the butterfly shape with a pencil. Place the stencil sheet on cutting mat and carefully cut out shape. Using the piece with the butterfly- shaped hole, place it inside the lamp shade, taping along the outer edge of the stencil. Spray the adhesive inside the stencil outline. Using fingers or metal leaf brush, pat silver leaf so it sticks to the adhesive. Fill in shape and spray with sealer. Repeat as desired. Attach lamp shade to table lamp and turn it on.
