Homemade vanilla extract is easy—all you do is split fragrant fresh vanilla bean pods in half, then steep in vegetable glycerin for 6 weeks. Store extract in either dark or clear bottles inside a cool cupboard, but not in the refrigerator, as cold temps can damage the flavor.

Makes 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 2 vanilla beans
  • ⅔ cup food-grade vegetable glycerin*
  • ¼ cup water

Directions

  1. Make a slit down the middle of each vanilla bean. Using a funnel, add vegetable glycerin and water to an 8.5-ounce bottle. Add vanilla beans. Close bottle securely and shake. Store in a dark place, shaking every few days. Use extract after 6 weeks.
  2. *Note: Find vegetable glycerin at health food stores or in first-aid sections at most drug stores.
