The Proverbs 31 Woman

“She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed in crimson.” Proverbs 31:21 NRSV

When the first snowflakes fall and start to cover the earth in white many people can’t wait to get out and enjoy it—sledding, skating, making snowmen. These activities remind us of the carefree days of childhood. But fresh powder isn’t so fun without the proper cold-weather clothing. Instead of having a good time in frosty surroundings an outing may prove to be painful and even dangerous. Like many things on earth, snow presents beauty and challenges. If you’re not properly prepared for the cold, the wonder of the season is gone.

So how does a wise woman prepare herself and her household for snow and whatever else may come? Proverbs 31 describes a virtuous woman of the time. In general terms, this description is still valid for wise women to follow today.

First and foremost she is a woman who fears the Lord. She is industrious, intelligent and capable. “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom…” (Proverbs 31:25–26 ESV)

She chooses to prioritize her husband, his wants and desires and his leadership. “The heart of her husband trusts in her, and  he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.” (Proverbs 31:11–13 ESV)

She cares for her household and she goes about her duties with joy. She is prepared and plans ahead so her family is provided for—even with fine clothing. Scarlet and purple are mentioned—some Bible scholars believe scarlet refers to double-thick clothing which is warm enough to protect from cold.

She is hardworking and business-savvy—making items to sell and buying land. She is strong physically, spiritually and mentally. “She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.” (Proverbs 31:16–19 ESV)

She helps the poor, treats others well and is kind. She is rewarded with honor and praise. “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: ‘Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31:28–30 ESV)
