Use these templates and instructions below to create the projects seen in Design by the Book.

Genesis Pillow

Materials

  • Lettering template (download here)
  • Iron-on transfer sheets
  • Inkjet printer
  • 2 15×27-inch pieces of green fabric
  • 12×24-inch pillow insert
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Instructions

Using an inkjet printer, print template out on iron-on transfer sheets and trim. Center template on the right side of the pillow leaving enough space for the flange. With a hot iron, transfer image onto the right side of the fabric and let cool. With wrong sides together, sew 3½ sides together leaving a 1½-inch flange on every side. Push pillow insert into opening and finish sewing the seam. To get a worn look, fray the flanges by pulling some of the threads out of the fabric edges.

Verse Pillow

Materials

  • Verse template (download here)
  • Iron-on transfer sheets
  • Inkjet printer
  • 13×19-inch pillow insert
  • 2 15×21-inch pieces of tan fabric
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread

Instructions

Using an inkjet printer, print template out on iron on transfer sheets and trim. Center template on right side of fabric. With hot iron, transfer image and let cool. With right sides together, sew 3½ sides together and turn right sides out. Push pillow insert into opening and slip stitch shut.

Bird Pillow

Materials

  • 12×18-inch pillow insert
  • 2 15×21-inch pieces of tan fabric
  • 12×6-inch piece of green fabric
  • Bird template (download here)
  • Embroidery floss
  • Sewing machine 
  • Needle and thread
  • Square shell beads 
  • Instructions

Trace bird outline onto wrong side of green fabric and cut out. Center bird on the right side of a piece of the tan fabric and stitch on with embroidery floss.With right sides together, sew 3½ sides together leaving a 1-inch flange on all sides. Turn right side out. Push pillow insert into opening and slip stitch shut. Hand stitch beads on with embroidery floss going through both layers of fabric.
